When you perform a backup you are securely connected with triple encryption to one of the Datacenters.  The datacenter you are connected to will be based on current workloads and speed.  In most cases you are connected into the one nearest to you geographically for best upload speed.  Once your data is uploaded into 1 of the datacenters your data is then securely replicated to at least 1 other location for redundancy.
